Hurricane Harvey Assistance
HURRICANE HARVEY update: Due to the disaster in Texas, there will be many displaced animals for a long time to come. Rescues in the Wichita area have mobilized to help the affected areas. Hands of Hope Rescue in Great Bend, KS., led by RaShann Southard, made contact with several shelters in Texas to see if HOHR could help with the overcrowding of animals who came in before the hurricane so that kennels could be freed to house those pets displaced by the storm. In the last couple of days, HOHR headed to Texas and returned early this morning. Wichita Animal Action League’s Founder/Executive Director Sarah Coffman had coordinated with RaShann to accept dogs from the transport to fill the 4 currently remaining foster homes WAAL has available and we picked those animals up at around 1AM this morning.
Working with RaShann and crew is always a wonderful experience, and HOHR did a fantastic job on this rescue and transport. WAAL continues to assess how we might help additional animals in the affected areas and those plans are in progress. Stay tuned!
We will continue to need reinforcements in terms of fosters to keep accepting animals from the disaster area. If you’d like to foster, please complete an application at WAALrescue.org/foster-app or with another rescue of your choosing. Donations are always helpful in caring for unexpected influxes of animals; in addition to taking these animals from Texas, we also pulled several at-risk dogs from the shelter here in Wichita, yesterday.
